appointed, and the successful man must therefore be prepared to be the subject of a certain amount of adverse criticism. That is the price often of success. But there are some appointments which stand out apart by themselves in which the dissatisfaction is general; and when that is the case, it is usually founded on substantial reasons. The recent appointment to the Chair of Anatomy in the Calcutta Medical College, including as it does the Second Surgeoncy to the Hospital and the post of Clinical Teacher iu Surgery appears to come under the latter class. It has undoubtedly caused both disappointment and dissatisfaction among the members of the Bengal Branch of the Indian Medical Service, and the appointment is held by them to inflict a grave injustice on nearly every one of the service in Bengal not holding a good appointment in Calcutta. It is felt that the claims of men like Murray, Russell, Bovell and others have been overlooked, though all of them are excellent surgeons, and would have filled the post of Second Surgeon aud Clinical Teacher to the Hospital with credit; aud it is maintained that promotion thus refused to thera produces a block iu the Bengal Service which will last for years, aud thus indirectly affect men of some twelve years' standing who have done good work and naturally were looking forward to succeed to some of the second class appointments.
